Mannheim (dpa / lsw) – A World War II bomb was found during construction work in Mannheim on Thursday morning. Residents within a radius of 500 meters around the site have to leave their houses and apartments, the city said. Around 2,000 people are affected, said a spokesman for the city administration. The 250-kilogram bomb on Mulberry Island should therefore be defused on Thursday.

For the duration of the mitigation, the city has set up a care room for people who cannot stay with relatives, friends or elsewhere in the canteen of the University of the Federal Employment Agency.
