After the acclaimed derby victory, the Nuremberg soccer pros also fulfill their mandatory task at the regional league team Kaan-Marienborn. Geis and Valentini score the goals at 2-0.
Siegen (dpa / lby) – After the brilliant derby victory against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, 1. FC Nuremberg only managed the first task in the DFB Cup with difficulty. The “Club” won 2-0 (1-0) in the game of the year at regional football club 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn on Friday evening and was able to secure the hoped-for entry into the second round.
In front of around 6,000 spectators in Siegen’s Leimbach Stadium, midfielder Johannes Geis scored the goals for the “Club” with a well-placed free kick (45th minute) and full-back Enrico Valentini (84th). The district club from Siegen, which was only founded in 2007, had reached the first main round of the cup for the first time and now had to accept its first defeat in 2022.
“It’s important that we made progress,” commented Geis. “We can do better in the second half. But you also have to say: Hats off to Kaan-Marienborn. They did very well. In the end we’re through. That’s what counts,” emphasized the goal scorer.
The four-time cup winners from Nuremberg, who were supported by 2,500 fans who had traveled with them, made four changes. Coach Robert Klauss also made a change in goal and gave Carl Klaus a chance to prove himself. The guests needed some time to warm up in Siegerland and had good chances to score through Mats Möller Daehli, Christoph Daferner and Kwadwo Duah. But it was Geis who gave the visitors the lead shortly before the break with a converted free kick.
The regional league put up a long resistance, but could not overcome the Nuremberg defense. Valentini made the decision shortly before the end with a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area. “In the second half we made it a bit too easy for them and allowed ourselves a few mistakes,” said Valentini. “After that we got the game under control again and deservedly won.”
