Nuremberg (dpa/lby) – With 20 million euros, the federal government wants to promote spaces for the independent art and culture scene in the congress hall on the former Nazi party rally grounds. The budget committee of the Bundestag decided on Thursday, said several Nuremberg MPs.
The Congress Hall is part of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds, where the National Socialists staged their propagandistic party congresses from 1933 to 1938. According to the plans of the Nazis, 50,000 people were to cheer the NS greats during their speeches in the huge round building. However, the congress hall was never completed. The shell of the building is largely empty today.
The city of Nuremberg is planning to develop a section and create spaces for the independent art and culture scene, which could be used for exhibitions, events or as studios, for example. During the renovation of the more than 100-year-old opera house in the city center, the state theater is also to find alternative quarters there: rehearsal rooms, workshops and offices are to be built in the monumental building, with an alternative venue in the inner courtyard.
