The perpetrators usually come at night. They blow up an ATM and then escape with the loot. Professionalism increases.
Munich/Wernberg-Köblitz (dpa/lby) – In the first half of 2022, ATMs in Bavaria were blown up twice as often as in the same half of the previous year. The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) recorded twelve such acts by the end of June. There were 6 cases in the first half of 2021, but 17 in the whole of 2021.
The last act was only a few days ago: On Wednesday (June 29), perpetrators in Wernberg-Köblitz in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf blew up the ATM of a bank branch with the help of explosives, in the middle of a residential area. After that, they presumably headed down one of the two nearby freeways—a common pattern.
“According to the current status, around three quarters of the cases from 2022 are attributed to Dutch groups,” explained a spokesman for the LKA. The perpetrators are becoming increasingly professional and are increasingly using solid explosives. In the past year, they had mainly used gas in order to get the six-figure haul on average. However, the LKA did not provide any information on the amount stolen so far this year. The number is only published in summary form for the year as a whole.
