Parsdorf (dpa / lby) – BMW starts the commissioning of its competence center for battery cell production in Parsdorf near Munich. The first systems have been set up, and the systems for electrode production are currently being installed and run in, the carmaker announced on Tuesday. With the competence centers in Munich and Parsdorf, BMW wants to deepen its knowledge of the technology and production of battery cells for electric cars so that it can make specifications to its suppliers on an equal footing.
The car manufacturer wants to buy battery cells where production takes place. In contrast to other car manufacturers, BMW is not planning its own series production of cells because the technology is developing rapidly and the high investments for a small car manufacturer would be a brake on innovation.
The center in Parsdorf will produce cell samples for the next, more powerful battery generation, which will be used in BMW’s “New Class” car models from 2025. “We are currently pushing ahead with the development of solid-state batteries,” said Markus Fallböhmer, head of battery production. The long-term goal is a fully recyclable battery cell.
