Munich (dpa/lby) – The street carnival attracted more people in Munich this year than before the pandemic. According to the cross-industry business association “CityPartnerMünchen”, around 215,000 people celebrated at the first carnival without Corona requirements since 2020 on Shrove Monday and Shrove Tuesday between Marienplatz and Stachus. In 2019 and 2020 there were around 185,000 visitors, as the association announced on Ash Wednesday. It was counted with permanently installed laser counting systems in Munich’s pedestrian zone.
“We are pleased that people – also to celebrate together – like to come to the city center again,” said Managing Director Wolfgang Fischer. “And after the difficult years, Petrus also showed himself to be a true carnival friend this year.” Especially on the carnival days there was plenty of sun and temperatures around 15 degrees. At the Christmas market at the end of last year, it was already evident: “People like to go out again, meet friends and celebrate.”
