Munich (dpa / lby) – The tenor Daniel Prohaska has been appointed Bavarian chamber singer. Art Minister Markus Blume (CSU) described him as a “virtuoso all-rounder” after the appointment on Wednesday evening. Prohaska can do “everything that the performing arts have to offer: his wide-ranging repertoire includes leading roles in plays, operettas, musicals and operas”. Born in Frankfurt am Main, the Austrian with British-Irish roots has been closely associated with Munich’s Gärtnerplatztheater as a freelance singer for more than 20 years.

“With vocal versatility and outstanding acting skills, he is a celebrated guest on the big opera stages,” emphasized Blume. The 49-year-old tenor, who was trained at the Vienna Conservatory and also enjoyed acting and dance training, has performed at the Semperoper Dresden, London’s Royal Festival Hall and the National Opera in Strasbourg, among others.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Science and the Arts has awarded the title “Bavarian Chamber Singer” for outstanding artistic achievements since 1955. The prerequisite is at least five years of membership in one of the state theaters as an ensemble member or as part of regular guest appearances.
