Due to an administrative error, a prisoner gets access to hundreds of personal data from his fellow prisoners – and from JVA employees. The ministry advises caution.
Straubing (dpa / lby) – After a data breach in the Straubing correctional facility (JVA), the Ministry of Justice advises employees to pay more attention. If you notice anything suspicious, you should contact the police immediately, said a spokeswoman for the ministry in Munich.
What happened? Personal data and the corona test result of around 1200 people, including around 700 prisoners and 90 JVA employees, got into the hands of a prisoner in Straubing. The prisoner was previously tested for Corona. His data ended up in a file from the Straubing-Bogen health department. When the prisoner’s testing later became part of a procedure at the Regensburg Regional Court, the JVA forwarded the data to the prisoner and his lawyer at the end of October. But due to an “unconscious processing error” – according to the ministry – not only the details of the prisoner were included, but also hundreds of other people. Several media had previously reported on the data breach.
The prison management involved the police in the case and is in close contact with them, the ministry said. All those affected would have the opportunity to seek advice from the specialist services of the prison. The head of the institution’s internal crisis intervention team is also available – an experienced psychologist. However, there are currently no findings on a specific threat to JVA employees.
According to the ministry, the case is still being processed. Legal measures would be examined. Modified processes in the prison should prevent such a case from happening again. And the data already sent? They have already been deleted from the case file and this should soon be the case in the JVA as well.
