Coburg (dpa / lby) – A fire in the basement of the Coburg Natural History Museum damaged several exhibits. According to the first findings, the cause was a technical defect, the police said on Tuesday. A museum spokeswoman said that stuffed animals were particularly affected. Some of them were burned, some burned, others blackened by the smoke.

The extent of the damage is not yet foreseeable, said the spokeswoman. Because at the moment it is still completely unclear which of the exhibits that were affected could be saved. According to the police, the museum’s alarm system went off around 11 p.m. on Monday evening. Firefighters extinguished the heavily smoking part of the building. Since only the depots in the basement were affected, museum operations continue as normal, said the museum spokeswoman.
