Munich (dpa / lby) – it’s cold in Bavaria – and ice is forming on the ponds, lakes and streams. But be careful, you should not step on the ice surface. That advises the water rescue service of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK). For safety reasons, ice skating or curling should only be done on officially approved waters.

“Ice areas on natural bodies of water should be better avoided. Anyone who still wants to do winter sports on the ice should only go on monitored bodies of water and never go on the ice alone, as well as the warnings of the local authorities, the local media and information and prohibition signs on site watch out,” said Thomas Huber, head of the water rescue service, in Munich.

The rapid response groups of the water rescue service had 209 ice-related operations in Bavaria last winter, 91 of which were life-saving.
