Augsburg (dpa / lby) – At the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Augsburg, a group of nine children and young people is said to have attacked two participants violently. The 16 and 19-year-old CSD activists were kicked and beaten and, according to the police, treated in the hospital. The trigger was loud homophobic statements and provocations by young people and children, who publicly expressed their rejection of homosexuals, the police reported on Thursday. The CSD Augsburg took place on June 18th.

The investigators only announced the details on Thursday due to several apartment searches. Eight of the nine alleged thugs have now been identified. The police said the victims were children and young people between the ages of 12 and 17.

In June, the Augsburg CSD organizers initially reported an “anti-queer incident” in which two people were beaten and kicked when they were lying on the ground.

The SPD-Left faction in the Augsburg city council then declared that the act was shocking and speechless. “The incident makes it clear why the CSD, the daily educational work and consistent solidarity with queer people are needed,” said parliamentary group leader Florian Freund (SPD).

Pride takes place every year in many cities around the world and commemorates the events of June 28, 1969 in New York: police officers stormed a gay and lesbian bar on Christopher Street, triggering protests by gays, lesbians and transsexuals that lasted several days. The CSD is intended to remind of the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex and queer people.
