Munich (dpa / lby) – police officers arrested an apparently mentally ill man who was armed with several knives in downtown Munich. Emergency services stopped the 59-year-old in a shopping arcade on Saturday by using tear gas against him, the police said on Monday. After the arrest, the man attacked two police officers who were slightly injured.
According to the police, the 59-year-old smashed a shop window at Viktualienmarkt with a stone around 7 p.m. and stole several knives from the display. He then went in the direction of the pedestrian zone and visibly carried the knife, which unsettled passers-by. A large number of police officers tried to stop the man. He pointed the knife at the officers. He was incapacitated and arrested in a shopping arcade after repeatedly using an irritant sprayer.
After the arrest, the man, who had injured himself with the knives, attacked a police officer at the station and slightly injured him. He was then taken to a psychiatric hospital. On the way there he attacked another officer. A preliminary investigation is underway against him, among other things, for threatening and assaulting law enforcement officials.
