Landshut (dpa / lby) – A 42-year-old man was found guilty in the district court in Landshut for attempted murder in 56 cases through an arson attack on a refugee home in Lower Bavaria. The presiding judge sentenced the accused to five and a half years in prison. On Tuesday, the Bavarian Refugee Council described it as positive “that violence against refugees is not dismissed as trivial”.
In his closing speech on Monday evening, the representative of the Munich public prosecutor’s office called for seven years in prison and assumed that the accused had xenophobic attitudes. The defense attorney, on the other hand, saw in fact the “outflow of alcohol excess” and pleaded for four years in prison for attempted manslaughter. Both sides declared a waiver of appeal.
The criminal court also ordered the man to be placed in a rehabilitation center. According to the psychiatric expert, there is a high risk that the 42-year-old could commit further crimes under the influence of alcohol.
In October 2021, the accused set fire to several places in the asylum seeker accommodation in Simbach am Inn after visiting a disco and arguing with his partner. According to the indictment, before the crime he sent his partner a cell phone message announcing the crime. The residents were able to extinguish the fire before the fire brigade arrived, the property damage was around 15,000 euros.
