Gütersloh (dpa / lby) – First-year students in Bavaria have to reckon with admission restrictions at the start of the winter semester. The proportion of courses with numerus clausus (NC) rose by 2.6 percentage points to 36.5 percent in the winter semester 2022/23 compared to the previous year. The Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) examines the quotas every year and announced the results on Wednesday.
In a nationwide comparison, Bavaria is in the middle. If you look at Germany as a whole, 39.7 percent of courses have restricted admission, and this figure has been declining slightly for years. This fits with a falling number of first-year students with a simultaneous increase in courses. The CHE did not examine why the NC quota in Bavaria increased in contrast to the national figure.
Of the Bavarian university locations with more than 19,000 students, Munich has the highest NC rate at 52 percent, followed by Nuremberg and Würzburg with 33 percent each. In terms of subject groups, the proportion of courses with restricted admission is highest in law, economics, social sciences at 47 percent. This is followed by mathematics and natural sciences (42%), engineering sciences (40%) and languages ??and cultural studies (25%).
