Passenger planes remain on the ground at Munich Airport on Friday. Around 700 flights could be affected – but not the official guests of the security conference.
Munich (dpa / lby) – After the strike announced by the Verdi union, Munich Airport will cease regular passenger operations on Friday. The airport announced on Wednesday. All special flights are excluded, including relief flights, flights for medical, technical and other emergencies and flights for the Munich Security Conference beginning on Friday.
“Due to the strike, Flughafen München GmbH has applied to the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, the supreme aviation supervisory authority, to exempt the airport from the obligation to operate commercial air traffic for this day,” said a statement from the airport. The request was granted. Thus, no regular passenger flights should take place from Friday at 00:00 a.m. to Saturday 01:00 a.m. More than 700 take-offs and landings are planned in Munich on Friday, a spokesman for Germany’s second largest airport said at noon.
The Verdi union had called for all-day warning strikes at several German airports on Friday. A joint strike by public sector employees, aviation security and ground handling services is planned in Munich, as Verdi Bayern announced on Wednesday.
With the walkout, the employees want to emphasize their demands in the collective bargaining dispute between the federal and local governments. In the negotiations, Verdi and the civil servants’ association DBB are demanding 10.5 percent more income, but at least 500 euros more for the approximately 2.5 million employees. The term should be twelve months. The employers have rejected the claims. The second round of negotiations is scheduled for February 22nd and 23rd in Potsdam.
