Regensburg (dpa / lby) – Two police officers and a smoke detector probably saved the life of a 22-year-old in the Upper Palatinate. The officials had heard the smoke detector whistling in a building next to the district in Regensburg, the police said. When they checked Thursday night, smoke was already pouring out of an open balcony door.

After knocking and shouting at the apartment door to no avail, the police officers kicked it in. They brought the 22-year-old resident outside, where he was treated by the emergency doctor. According to police, the man was under the influence of painkillers that he had taken for an injury. He fell asleep while preparing food. This led to heavy smoke in the apartment.
