It is often difficult for Ukrainian children and young people to continue their education after fleeing. In Munich, they can now learn according to the Ukrainian curriculum and obtain a Ukrainian degree. The project is probably the first of its kind.
Munich (dpa/lby) – More than 50 young refugees from Ukraine can obtain a Ukrainian diploma at a school in Munich. The “SchlaU” school registered the students last month with the Ukrainian Ministry of Education for a degree in the summer of 2023, said the founder and director of the Munich supplementary school, Michael Stenger. Until then, classes will follow a special curriculum that has been developed with partner schools in Ukraine and meets the requirements of the Ukrainian Ministry of Education.
The motto of the project is “the best of both”. In addition to the Ukrainian timetable, German lessons are also on the young people’s curriculum. After graduation, they should be able to decide for themselves whether they want to enroll at a Ukrainian university or continue their education in Germany. The school also offers help with integration into German society and psycho-social and trauma-pedagogical support, it said.
The project is apparently the only one of its kind so far – neither the initiators nor the Bavarian Ministry of Education are aware of any similar offers for Ukrainian refugees in Bavaria. The school receives support from many sources, including the Ukrainian Ministry of Education, a partner school in the Ukrainian city of Ternopil and the Ukrainian consulate in Munich.
The “SchlaU” school has been around for more than 20 years. According to the company, the supplementary school not only offers refugees a safe learning environment, but also psychosocial support. The educational offer is managed by the “Trägerkreis Junge Refugees e.V.” in cooperation with the city of Munich.
