Munich (dpa / lby) – According to the federal police, the number of unauthorized entries to Bavaria is likely to have almost doubled in 2022. While around 15,700 cases were registered in 2021, according to preliminary figures there were around 27,260 unauthorized entries in 2022 (reference date: December 6), as the authority announced.
During the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, the numbers had decreased noticeably. According to the Federal Police balance sheet, there were 14,500 registered unauthorized entries in 2019, and 13,400 cases in 2020. The decline is likely to have been due to border closures and train cancellations due to corona restrictions, a spokesman said. One can only speculate about the reasons for the significant increase in 2022.
According to the information provided by November 2022, the five most common countries of origin were Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey, India and Tunisia. Throughout the previous year, most of the people who entered the country illegally came from Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq and Albania.
There was a shift in the type of entry: While in 2019 the majority of people came by road – 36 percent by car, 31 percent by bus – and only 22 percent by train, the ratio turned in 2022. From 49 percent of those who entered the country illegally up to November came by train, 27 percent used cars and twelve percent used buses.
Citizens from the EU can usually not enter without permission, as a spokesman explained. People from outside the EU who, for example, cannot show the necessary visa and border crossing documents or financial security are considered to have entered the country illegally.
