Munich (dpa / lby) – The start of February will be uncomfortable. The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts a mix of rain, sleet, wind and now and then some snow for the coming days. Sometimes there could also be stormy gusts at temperatures in the single digits. Dirk Mewes from the German Weather Service (DWD) spoke on Monday of typical weather for this time of year: “We have winter!”.

It should snow above all at higher altitudes above 800 or 1000 meters. According to the DWD, even one meter of fresh snow could fall further up. “The skiers are happy when a little something is added,” said Mewes. In the rest of Bavaria, rather uncomfortable muddy weather should prevail. If the forecasts come true, it will be wet, cold and windy.

It looked very different at the beginning of the year. On New Year’s Day, people in Bavaria experienced t-shirt weather with temperatures of around 18 degrees, especially in the foothills of the Alps. According to the DWD’s monthly balance sheet, new preliminary records have been set in many places.

In the second half of January it got noticeably colder – and in the mountains and in the foothills of the Alps there was also more snow. Bavaria was the coldest and driest federal state that month, with an average temperature of 2.3 degrees (January 2022: minus 1.9 degrees). The sun shone for 41 hours, more than in any other part of Germany.
