Munich/Offenbach (dpa/lby) – Hailstones larger than tennis balls on the edge of the Alps, deep cracks in the much too dry ground in Franconia: June was a month of extremes in Bavaria and the third warmest June since recording began. This was announced by the German Weather Service (DWD) in its preliminary balance sheet on Wednesday in Offenbach, Hesse. The average temperature was therefore 18.9 degrees and thus 4 degrees above the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961 to 1990. According to meteorological calculations, it has been summer since June 1st (until August 31st). According to the calendar, summer began on June 21 (beginning of autumn on September 23).
With 85 liters per square meter, Bavaria was the second wettest federal state, with the average for the period 1961 to 1990 being 112 liters per square meter. It was very dry in Lower Franconia – not even 10 liters per square meter fell here in the whole month. On the other hand, in the south and south-east: heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain and hailstorms – on June 27, grain diameters of 7 centimeters were measured at the edge of the Alps. The sun shone for around 280 hours, 80 hours more than the average in the period 1961 to 1990.
According to the DWD, the nationwide average temperature in June was 18.4 degrees and thus 3 degrees above the value of the reference period 1961 to 1990. Compared to the current and warmer period 1991 to 2020, it is plus 2 degrees. It was therefore the sixth warmest June since measurements began.
