Dietfurt (dpa / lby) – Thousands of onlookers and participants celebrated in sunny weather at the “Chinese carnival” in Dietfurt an der Altmühl. The spectacle traditionally takes place on Nonsensical Thursday with a large masked procession and has a 95-year history, since the 1950s there has also been an emperor’s proclamation.
There were significantly more spectators in the streets this year, as eyewitnesses and an employee of the town hall reported. A local resident suspected that this was probably due to the “lots of advertising” – he was referring to the recurring debate as to whether the “Chinese carnival” is insulting and racist. This question has also been discussed in recent weeks. From the point of view of the city of Dietfurt (district of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz), the festival contributes to the Bavarian-Chinese cultural exchange. There is a partnership and good contact with the city of Nanjing.
