Munich/Aschaffenburg (dpa/lby) – A new online model project in three municipalities is intended to promote the Bavaria-wide exchange of old driver’s licenses. The districts of Aschaffenburg and Munich and the city of Fürth will start the project supported by the Digital Ministry, the ministry announced on Monday in Munich. Other districts and urban districts followed in the next few months.

“I am very pleased to be able to start the digital driver’s license exchange today. It is a fully digitized service with no media disruptions,” said Bavaria’s Digital Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU). She spoke of an “important milestone” on the way to fully digital administration.

In the three pilot municipalities, six million drivers with older driving licenses can exchange them online for new ones. Previously, this was only possible with personal appointments.

“Online administration offers like this are not only good for the citizens, who save themselves the time-consuming trip to the office. They also make the work of the municipalities easier and more efficient,” emphasized Gerlach. She called on all driving license offices in the country to also use the new service and offer it to local citizens.

Drivers in the three municipalities can apply for new driving licenses online and then only have to send the old one to the responsible driving license office. You will then usually receive your new driver’s license in the mail.

The driver’s license exchange is the first of several driver’s license administration services that will be digitized in the coming months. The service is part of the so-called BayernPackages. This package contains around 200 online services that are made available to municipalities by the Digital Ministry.
