Lautertal (dpa / lby) – A weather balloon from the University of Frankfurt went off course in Bavaria and landed on a motorway in Upper Franconia. According to the police on Thursday, the balloon should collect data on environmental pollution over the Thuringian Forest. For currently unclear reasons, the flying object deviated from its route on Wednesday and landed on the Autobahn 73 near Lautertal in the Coburg district. When they noticed the discrepancy, the pilots of the balloon – employees of the Goethe University in Frankfurt – reportedly reported directly to the police. Several residents and road users are said to have already informed the operations center about a parachute. Nobody is said to have been endangered on the A72.
