Nuremberg (dpa / lby) – The former Augsburg Markus Weinzierl (47) is to become the new coach of 1. FC Nuremberg, according to information from the “Bild” newspaper. The man from Straubing announced his farewell to Bundesliga club FC Augsburg live in front of the TV camera in the summer and has been without a job ever since. In Nuremberg he would succeed Robert Klauss, who was on leave.

“We had several candidates, but we decided on one,” said sports director Dieter Hecking at a media round on Monday before “Bild” reported on Weinzierl as a personal matter. “I have someone in mind who we are also in talks with.” The Franconian second division soccer team also wants to come to an agreement quickly with the external solution.

The successor to Klauß, who has been released, is to take care of the Nuremberg team, which has fallen to 14th place in the table, next Sunday (1.30 p.m.) in the home game against Holstein Kiel. “We are working flat out on the successor,” emphasized Hecking. “We’re trying to come up with a solution as soon as possible.”

A return to the coaching bench for Hecking himself is “completely impossible”, as he admitted. According to the sports director, the team currently seems “disoriented”. Hecking therefore said about the requirements profile of the new coach: “We need someone to stabilize the whole structure again.”
