Regensburg (dpa/lby) – SSV Jahn Regensburg is starting the new season of the 2nd Bundesliga with the usual restrained ambitions. “We can’t shake our goal: get 40 points as quickly as possible,” coach Mersad Selimbegovic told the “Passauer Neue Presse” (Tuesday). The team wanted “to get away from the places that cause headaches as quickly as possible”. Last season, after a disappointing second half of the season, Jahn only reached the 40-point mark on the 32nd matchday and thus celebrated relegation.
With a home game against SV Darmstadt 98 on July 16, the Regensburg team will start their sixth second division season in a row. However, Selimbegovic does not see his team as an established second division team. “One possible scenario for this would be if we could say at the start of the season that a lot of things really shouldn’t work out so that we don’t end up in a single-digit place in the table,” explained the 40-year-old.
Selimbegovic expects further additions until the start of the season. “In any case, the squad planning is not yet complete,” said the coach, referring to “back left”. With the departure of Erik Wekesser to league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg, Jahn definitely has a need for the left-back position.
