Two boys were hit by a car Wednesday morning while riding their bicycles to school in east Orange County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on Alafaya Club Drive at Lokanotosa Trail.

Troopers said the boys, ages 8 and 5, were headed to elementary school and crossing the road when they were struck by a red Nissan Maxima.

The children weren’t wearing helmets and received minor injuries, Trooper Steven Montiero said. Their mother took them to a hospital.

Montiero said speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash and the driver stayed at the scene.

Troopers were blocking traffic in the area while investigating.

As SunRail officials struggle with uncertainties over when to apply for an essential and already delayed federal grant or when the southern expansion into Osceola County will be complete, one matter is abundantly clear but not talked about much: the cost of collecting fares from riders – arising from ticketing machines, armored cars, staff and other expenses – is greater than the revenue brought in by fares.
