JERSEY CITY – Police are investigating an incident in which a commuter van was involved in a crash on the NJ Turnpike in Bayonne that sent nine people to hospitals continued driving until it was pulled over at the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City.
At 6:11 a.m. the van driven by a 46-year-old New York City man slammed into the rear of a Ford van in heavy traffic with enough force to propel the van into the SUV in front of it, State Police Trooper Lawrence Peele said this afternoon.
The trooper said four people aboard the Ford were taken to Bayonne Medical Center complaining of minor injuries. He said the commuter van continued on the Turnpike Extension to the Holland Tunnel toll plaza were Port Authority police had been advised to be on the lookout for it.
When the commuter van was stopped at about 7:30 a.m. 11 people complained of injuries and five were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, said Port Authority Police Department spokesman Joseph Pentangelo, who described the collision as minor.
Jersey City Medical Center spokesman Mark Rabson said the three adult and two children were treated for minor injuries and released.
Peele said the New York man was not issued any citations and the incident remains under investigation.
