The Table of Congress has approved with the votes of the two formations that support the Government, PSOE and Unidas Podemos, to extend in principle one more week the term for the presentation of amendments to the bill with which the Socialists intend to correct the so-called law of only yes is yes. This has been confirmed by the UP parliamentary spokesman, Pablo Echenique.

The justification that they provide from the purple party is to have more time to try to reach a common position, something that, however, they did not achieve throughout the three months -since the beginning of December- during which the two partners of the Government of The coalition negotiated to try to jointly agree on a rectification of the norm in order to stop the sentence reductions and the release of sexual offenders. At this point, Echenique calls on the PSOE to “let go of the right hand.”

The refusal of the Ministry of Equality to accept any readjustment because it implied, in its opinion, eliminating the principle of consent from the core of the law, caused the negotiations to fail and forced the Socialist group, by express mandate of the President of the Government, to urgently present a bill, which was accepted for processing by the Plenary of Congress with the vote in favor of the PP and the resounding opposition of Unidas Podemos and the partners of the investiture bloc.

The proposal thus undertook the parliamentary procedure with a view to its urgent final approval. However, this processing, which was initially intended to be accelerated, has already been postponed for three weeks. Today, the Socialist Group has supported the claim of the government’s junior partner, Unidas Podemos, to again lengthen the debate and the vote in committee, a decisive step for the rectification of the law to become a reality.

From Unidas Podemos they claim to be negotiating with their parliamentary allies, ERC and EH Bildu, to present joint amendments to the bill with the aim of keeping intact the principle of consent, a principle that, according to the PSOE, is not touched by their proposal of rectification.

At the moment, with the extensions of the amendment term, a method of parliamentary filibustering used when trying to get a proposal to end up declining, what is achieved is delaying the rectification of the star Equality law that has already facilitated more than 700 reductions in conviction and fifty releases of sexual offenders.
