The Spanish Troop and Sailor Association (ATME) criticized this Thursday the Government’s announcement for the construction of 20,000 public homes on Ministry of Defense land while members of the Armed Forces have to wait months to occupy logistical accommodation or are even evicted from them.
ATME recalls that the military have a great geographical mobility for which they have to leave their habitual residence and find other accommodation in their new destination, in many cases areas where prices are very high such as Madrid or Valencia.
This, he stresses, with “deficient” salaries that are sometimes at the same level as the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI).
According to details, in 2022 there were 186 soldiers on the waiting list to be able to occupy logistical accommodation, while in 2023 the situation has worsened, with 696 soldiers and 40 evicted.
“While the Government announces that houses are going to be built on Defense land, it forgets about something as essential as the situation of the military,” denounces the association, accusing the Executive and Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, of having left “for time” to take an interest in the problems of their workers.
