The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the proposal of the Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, to appoint Antonio Piñeiro Sánchez as the new Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy (AJEMA), promoting him to Admiral General. Until now, Piñeiro Sánchez was the Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy and replaces Antonio Martorell, who died on March 31.
Born in 1960 in Ferrol (A Coruña), he joined the Navy in 1979, obtaining the job of Ensign of Navío in 1984 and since then he has had different jobs both on ships and on land. His experience includes deployments in the Persian Gulf (Operation “Desert Storm”), the Mediterranean (“Active Endeavour”), the South Pacific (“Luis Váez de Torres” Cruise) and on several occasions in the permanent naval groups of the NATO.
On land, among others, he was assigned to the Navy General Staff in the Communications Section of the CIS Division, in the Higher School of the Armed Forces, in the Naval Education Directorate, as Head of the Coordination and Control Section , where he had a very active participation in the design and implementation of the new training teaching model in the FAS. He has also been Chief of the Intelligence Section of the Operations Division of the Army General Staff.
