On Sunday, June 27, the “WHAT’S POPPIN” rapper arrived at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater dressed in all black and shared a few laughs with culture’s elite.

Twitter couldn’t help wondering why. Twitter exploded with criticisms of the network for allowing a black rapper to be honored, much like Eminem in 2001 when he was nominated for a BET Award for his “Stan” video featuring Dido.

Eminem would receive additional nominations in 2003 and 2010, but never win an award. He was more welcome at BET over the years. Eminem performed a harsh verse against Donald Trump at 2017’s BET Hip Hop Awards. Jack Harlow is still a relatively new rap artist and has a long way to go before he can reach the same level of acceptance as Eminem. He does have the “Killer (Remix) collab to Slim Shady, Cordae.

Harlow, 23, was not able to leave the BET Awards empty handed. However, he smiled as he walked onto the red carpet. He will never forget it, and Twitter will too.

Below are some reactions.
