The latest episode of The One Show featured an emotional surprise for teacher Oli McVeigh from Ferndown Upper School. Oli, who teaches English, ethics, and media, was awarded the Pearson National Teaching Awards for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School. Viewers got to hear from Oli’s students and colleagues who praised him for his enthusiasm and dedication to helping students excel in their subjects.

Not only does Oli go above and beyond to assist students in his own classes, but he also developed a mentor program for male students to promote positive masculinity and mental health. His colleague, deputy head Deneen Kenchington, became emotional when talking about the impact Oli has on students, saying that he sees people for who they truly are.

Host Roman Kemp orchestrated a surprise for Oli by pretending to stage a radio documentary on boys’ education. Little did Oli know, his students and colleagues were waiting at The One Show studio in London to surprise him with the prestigious award. Overwhelmed with emotion, Oli expressed his gratitude and disbelief at the unexpected recognition.

But the surprises didn’t end there. The One Show also arranged for a special message from Dan Smith, the lead singer of Oli’s favorite band, Bastille. The heartwarming moment was shared on social media, with viewers celebrating Oli’s well-deserved achievement as a teaching hero.

The One Show airs every weeknight at 7pm on both BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories and surprises as the show continues to highlight exceptional individuals in our community.
