Queen Elizabeth II’s health has not been the best for quite some time. Now, however, even the new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, is declaring that “the whole country” is “deeply concerned”. Doctors have been monitoring the 96-year-old since morning.
Queen Elizabeth II smiled bravely as always when she named Liz Truss as Britain’s new prime minister on Tuesday. Nevertheless, she appeared frighteningly gaunt and fragile. Leaning on a cane, she extended her delicate hand to the conservative politician.
In fact, the day that the 96-year-old also received Truss predecessor Boris Johnson and accepted his resignation did not leave her untouched. So she had to cancel a virtual meeting of her Privy Council planned for Wednesday. “After a busy day yesterday, Her Majesty accepted the advice of her doctors to rest this afternoon,” a palace spokesman said.
This is far from the first time the Queen’s health has raised concerns. She had repeatedly had to cancel appointments in the past few weeks and months. Mostly it was said that the monarch had to pass because of her “mobility problems”. She first appeared in public with a walking stick last October.
Now, however, concerns about the Queen seem to be getting worse. Buckingham Palace said: “Following a further assessment this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended that she remain under medical observation.” However, the Queen feels comfortable and is staying at her country estate, Balmoral Castle, it said.
Against the background of this announcement, the Prime Minister also spoke via Twitter. The “entire country” is “deeply concerned,” writes Truss. And further: “My thoughts – and the thoughts of everyone in the UK – are now with Her Majesty The Queen and her family.”
House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said: “We send our best wishes to Her Majesty The Queen, she and the Royal Family are in our thoughts and prayers at this moment.”
It is said that the Queen’s relatives have been informed. Crown Prince Charles and his son Prince William are on their way to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the Queen is currently staying. Charles will be accompanied by his wife, Duchess Camilla, the palace confirmed.
