Ferfried Maximilian Pius Meinrad Maria Hubert Michael Justinus Prince von Hohenzollern was born on April 14, 1943 at Umkirch Castle in Baden-Württemberg, the youngest son of Friedrich von Hohenzollern (1891-1965), head of the former princely House of Hohenzollern.

After studying law, Ferfried devoted himself to a career as a racing driver and in 1966 began to regularly compete in races in Europe with a BMW. In 1969 he was accepted into the works team at BMW. In 1971 he won the famous 24-hour race on the Nürburgring together with Gerold Pankl.
