Sebastian Hoeneß is no longer the coach of TSG Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga club is taking the consequences of the weak phase at the end of the past season and dismissing the trainer after two years. The Kraichgauer are the fourth club that is now looking for a new coach.
The playful European Cup entry through the last nine games without a win cost coach Sebastian Hoeneß his job at the Bundesliga soccer club TSG Hoffenheim. Although sports director Alexander Rosen only expressed his confidence in his coach at the end of April, the 40-year-old had to leave a few days after the botched season finale at Borussia Mönchengladbach (1: 5). According to both sides, the separation was “amicable”.
The Kraichgauer ended the season in ninth place. In the last three games, TSG suffered three defeats with a total of 13 goals conceded. As a result, the nephew of Bayern Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, who was in office for two seasons, had to resign. After Adi Hütter (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg) and Florian Kohfeldt (VfL Wolfsburg), Hoeneß is the fourth coach to leave or have to leave at the end of the season.
The dismissal of Hoeneß, whose contract actually ran until June 2023, came as a surprise despite the recent downturn. At the end of April, Rosen had explained that Hoeneß was firmly in the saddle at the club of majority owner Dietmar Hopp. “No – and I seriously wonder how you came up with this thesis in the first place,” Rosen had answered in “Kicker” when asked whether there were any remaining doubts about Hoeneß.
“Sebastian is a cool, honest guy, not a foam hitter, a strong communicator and an absolute football expert,” said Rosen about the coach: “We work together very trustingly and have common goals.” Most recently, Rosen, like Hoeneß, had repeatedly cited injury problems and weak defenses as the reason for the disappointing performance.
