August is a key and delicate month for our gardens and terraces. Despite being a time when most people enjoy their well-deserved vacations, the eighth month of the year requires carrying out a series of tasks so that the plants do not end up scorched by the high temperatures or devoured by some pest. And while the heat invites you to think otherwise, August is also a good time to plant some plants.

On the list of jobs to be done is pruning, harvesting, pinching stems or preparing the ground for autumn. Close attention should also be paid to watering; the humidity of the earth and the environment must be maintained, but avoiding an excess of water that could drown the plants, so it is recommended to water lightly in the coolest hours of the day and to spray the leaves assiduously.

Another enemy of our plant kingdom in August are the pests that threaten from spring. Mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, snails, butterflies and other insects can break in at any time and cause irreparable damage. It is time to be vigilant and act immediately at the first symptoms; not abusing fertilizers and applying insecticide periodically are the basic prevention measures.

Despite the high temperatures, August is a month in which some plants are planted. We are talking about sowing, which is recommended to be carried out in seedbeds with moist substrate and well protected from the sun’s rays until the plants germinate and it is time to transplant them into pots.

Although experts advise spring ahead, this month we can sow daisies, violets, bougainvillea, dwarf sunflowers, violas or climbers such as passion flower, always keeping in mind the care they need to start germinating and growing in a delicate environment.

You can also plant crocus or autumn daffodil bulbs and transplant geranium, poet’s carnation or wallflower.

The cyclamen, primrose or coleus and its colored leaves can also be planted in August. Not to mention aromatic plants, increasingly popular in homes, such as parsley, sage, fennel or chervil.

In August the heat leaves half or almost all of Spain dry. With the recent heat waves, it seems illogical to carry out any type of planting in the orchard during the month of August. However, it turned out to be a prodigal month to release several campuses.

The growth rate of many of them slows down with the heat, suffers and even delays their presence beyond six weeks. Even so, you can bet on some vegetables of great strength as a good option at this time of year.

Below we highlight the plants and seeds that we can add to our garden in the month of August:

One of the peculiarities of the month of August in the orchard is the planting calendar. Although the results do not see the light until the doors of autumn, we must know which seeds must be planted before August 15 so that they grow on time and correctly.

Chinese cabbage and winter radish can be planted until mid-August. While it is recommended to plant lettuce, spinach and white onions after August 15.

Also the month of August will be a good month to clean up and fix the garden. Prune some non-flowering branches on raspberries, plums, vines and vines. The objective is that the fruits that are on the way have a larger size.

It will also be the time to prepare the branches and tie the trees in the face of the first autumn storms. In addition, paying special attention to mildew in the vineyard that appears when the vine suffers high temperatures continuously.
