With the Korean series “Squid Game”, Netflix managed a huge surprise success last year. No wonder the makers want to build on it. So the production of a second season is now officially a done deal.
Netflix has – literally – given the “green light” for a sequel to “Squid Game”. It’s finally official that the hit series is getting a second season.
Netflix announced the decision via Twitter. The co-head of the streaming service, Ted Sarandos, unofficially promised new episodes of the Korean series hit in January.
Red light – green light: Netflix announced the order for new episodes with a play on words that refers to a murderous challenge in “Squid Game”. In the challenge, an oversized doll shoots the candidates who do not stop moving in time. The character, which is one of the hallmarks of the highest-grossing Netflix series of all time, also appears in a small teaser promoting the second season.
Along with the teaser, Netflix tweeted a message from series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. In it, he promises the expected return of protagonist Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-jae. The mysterious frontman who organized the deadly games in the first season also returns.
It is also possible to meet again with the man who lures people in debt to the “Squid Game”. And: We get to know Cheol-su. He is the friend of Young-hee – the murderous doll.
Netflix has not yet announced when the second season of “Squid Game” will be shown. According to earlier statements by Hwang Dong-hyuk, it could be 2023, but maybe even 2024.
“Squid Game” is about a game show in which indebted people from different social backgrounds compete against each other in children’s games. It’s not just about prize money in the millions, but also about life and death.
The series became a surprise hit on Netflix. In the first four weeks after launch, it was streamed by 142 million households. However, she has also been criticized for her brutality.
