Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – The beginning of the summer holidays in Hesse’s neighboring state of North Rhine-Westphalia is also noticeable at Frankfurt Airport. A spokesman for Germany’s largest airport announced that very high passenger numbers were recorded at the weekend. For Sunday, a total of just under 190,000 travelers were expected to start from the hub, land here or change trains. In the past week there were at least 10,000 fewer passengers a day.
The airport pointed out to travelers on its website that there could be delays in operations and individual flight cancellations due to the high number of passengers. The spokesman said that although there are queues at check-in counters or at the security check, operations are regulated. The airport advised travelers to appear at the check-in counter as early as possible before their departure.
Staff shortages are currently noticeable at the airports. During the Corona crisis, many service providers at the airports had laid off employees or they had looked for new jobs themselves. The working group of German commercial airports assumes a staff gap of 5,500 employees, who are missing from check-in to passenger control and aircraft handling.
Several thousand foreign workers could fill in for reliable holiday flights at the airports this summer. “The federal government is planning to allow urgently needed personnel to enter Germany for temporary work,” announced Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) in the “Bild am Sonntag”. According to information from government circles, a four-digit number of specialists should help out in Germany for a few months at best from July.
