Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – After the death of a man during a police operation with pepper spray in Hattersheim am Main, the body of the 28-year-old was examined by a forensic doctor. The public prosecutor’s office in Frankfurt was not yet able to provide any information on the cause of death on Friday. A spokeswoman said that the results of the toxicological tests, which would only be available in a few days, would first have to be awaited.
There is evidence that the 28-year-old was mentally ill and regularly took drugs. The man collapsed in a restaurant in Hattersheim in the Main-Taunus district on Wednesday evening. When the paramedics who were alerted wanted to help him, he is said to have become aggressive and also approached the police, who had been summoned for this reason. The officers used pepper spray, after which the man lost consciousness and later died in a hospital.
Because of the police operation, four police officers are being investigated on suspicion of negligent homicide. The State Criminal Police Office of Hesse is currently evaluating traces, witness interviews and bodycam recordings.
