Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – In view of the dry summer, not all plants are watered in the parks and public gardens in Hesse. “Meadows are only blown up in particularly representative places,” said the administration of the state palaces and gardens of Hesse, based in Bad Homburg. “Our trees and forests have to get their water needs from groundwater.”
In Kassel, too, lawns and trees are currently self-sufficient, although according to the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel (MHK), this does not matter much, at least to the lawn. “It’s all old lawns. They’re brown now, but they’re recovering,” said spokeswoman Natascha Callebaut.
In Frankfurt’s Palmengarten, the lawn is currently luckier. There, the woods are mostly watered at night. And since these are on meadows, they also get a bit of the wet. “We’re doing this as sparingly as possible,” emphasized Jörg Plaßmann from Frankfurt’s Palmengarten. “The drip irrigation we use runs slowly and continuously so that the plants can absorb the moisture better.”
Not all plants have to starve in the facilities of the MHK and the palace administration either, the beds are still watered with different techniques. “They would otherwise die,” according to the palace administration. In the Seligenstadt monastery and the Hanau-Wilhelmsbad state park, a new fountain should soon provide enough water for watering.
