Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) – In the future, families with children will be able to move into state-funded social housing in Hesse more easily. A draft law passed by the state government in the state parliament in Wiesbaden on Wednesday provides for the income limit for households with children to be increased and the calculation of total income to be changed. The amount of the total income determines, among other things, whether someone is entitled to move into social housing.
Among other things, the amount credited for children will be increased – this increases the income limit for families who want to move into social housing. “Our goal is that everyone in Hesse can find a suitable apartment at an affordable price,” Economics Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) said when the amendment was presented. Single parents and low-income families are particularly dependent on this.
With the changes to the two laws on social housing promotion, the municipalities should also have more opportunities to revoke housing entitlement certificates if social housing is empty or used as a second home.
The left faction criticized that the black-green state government had failed to initiate a real change of course in housing policy. “Instead, it leaves it with cosmetic corrections that don’t change anything about the fundamental problems,” explained Jan Schalauske, spokesman for housing policy. SPD MP Elke Barth said the law did not deserve the name Housing Promotion Act. The AfD parliamentary group also rejected the bill. The FDP parliamentary group abstained from voting in Parliament.
