Kassel (dpa/lhe) – When a fire escape collapsed in Kassel, three men were injured. A 22-year-old fell from a height of 7.50 meters in the incident on Wednesday evening and suffered life-threatening injuries, the police said on Thursday. A 21-year-old was initially able to hold on to the railing before he too fell. A second 22-year-old managed to avoid a fall and was slightly injured.

According to witnesses, the three appeared to have entered the attached fire escape on the second floor of an apartment building to smoke. As they stood on the ladder’s platform, it broke from its anchorage in the house wall and toppled over. It was initially unclear how this could happen. The police are investigating on suspicion of negligent bodily harm.
