Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) – More than 2,800 severely disabled teachers or equivalent work at Hessian schools on a temporary or permanent basis. This emerges from a response from the Ministry of Education to a small request from the SPD. The aim of the state government is to promote the employment of people with disabilities in the state administration. “In addition, the Hessian state government has taken a variety of measures to compensate as far as possible for the disadvantages that people experience as a result of their disability.” There is a reduction in compulsory hours and other compensation for disadvantages. According to the ministry, there were around 55,500 teaching positions in Hesse last school year.

Help and information are already available during the course. “Disadvantage compensation is anchored in the study and examination regulations of the teacher training courses and enables students, among other things, to apply for disadvantage compensation due to chronic illness or disability, for example by extending the processing times of examinations or by changing the examination situation,” says the answer. When recruiting teachers, people with disabilities should be given preference if they are equally qualified.
