Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – In the dispute over the further construction of Autobahn 66 with a tunnel in Frankfurt-Fechenheim, activists have announced further protests. “Should the forest be cleared, we will fight against it with all our might and protest massively against this insane construction project,” said the “Forest instead of asphalt” alliance on Wednesday. The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) wants to have an expert report on the occurrence of a protected beetle examined.

Autobahn GmbH published the results last Friday. According to this, the clearing of trees for the construction of the Riederwald tunnel is possible in certain areas, although the protected long-horned beetle was discovered on site. The places where the beetle could occur could be narrowed down locally. Outside of this there is an area that can be cleared without conflict.

BUND wants to review this report together with a law firm. “If we do not have a binding commitment that no clearing will take place by the time the tests are completed, we will take legal action,” said Willy Breder from BUND.

The continued construction of the A66 and its connection to the A661 with the planned Riederwald tunnel have been among the political long-running issues in Frankfurt since the mid-1980s. The clearing work for the tunnel has been postponed several times and is now expected to start in early 2023.
