Münster (dpa / lhe) – After days of extinguishing work in a forest in the immediate vicinity of a former ammunition factory in Münster in southern Hesse, the fire has been extinguished. After 145 hours of use, “fire out” could be reported on Friday, said district fire director Heiko Schecker on Saturday. Further control and observation drives would now be made. The affected area was provisionally estimated at 34 hectares. The police are investigating the cause of the fire, and the fire may have been intentionally set.
Since August 13, 4,500 emergency services, 615 vehicles and three helicopters have been involved throughout the fire. Fighting the fire from the air was an important part, said Schecker. 450,000 liters of water were poured into the fire by the helicopters of the Bundeswehr, federal police and state police alone. All fire brigades of the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg were involved, which were also supported by other professional and company fire brigades as well as the technical relief organization. A total of 36 kilometers of hose line were laid.
