An elderly motorist escaped injury Monday when a hose sprung a leak as he was pumping gas in Bethlehem Township, the fire chief there said.

It occurred about 5:40 p.m. at one of pumps at Giant Food Store, 2918 Easton Ave.

“The hose blew a hole in it while he was pumping,” township fire Chief Ron Ford said. “It was under pressure, so it sprayed out gas and it started leaking.”

Ford estimated the spill at a couple of gallons, which firefighters cleaned up with absorbent.

The attendant hit the kill switch for all the pumps, limiting the damage.

The motorist did not require medical evaluation, Ford said.

Giant later restarted the pumps, and the filling station remained open as usual until 10 p.m., said the acting store manager, Brian Kish.

He declined to comment further, and a representative of the supermarket chain was not immediately available.
