Last Monday, the Spanish edition of the CNN network published a news story with a happy ending for animal lovers, specifically for those who have a feline – or several – as a pet.
According to the American media, the Police in China rescued about 1,000 cats that were on their way to the slaughterhouse. The animals were inside a truck that was part of a network of illegal businesses, which fraudulently sell cat meat as if it were pork or lamb.
This fact puts into serious doubt the safety of fresh foods that can be consumed in China.
The incident took place in Zhangjiagang, in eastern China’s Jiangsu province. The agents were able to intervene in the vehicle, used to collect and transport cats that, otherwise, would have met a gruesome end.
“It is likely that the cats were slaughtered and sent to the south to serve their meat as pork and lamb skewers, as well as sausages,” reads the police report, echoed by The Paper.
The estimated value of this meat on the black market is more than 20,000 euros. Without amoebaro, the report does not mention whether the animals were stray cats or stolen pets.
