China. Adopted last April, the anti-espionage law, which comes into force this Saturday, July 1 in China, worries expatriates. Because the version of this law, adopted in 2014, becomes more restrictive: “the acquisition or provision of any document affecting national security and the interests of the State” will henceforth be illegal. On the other hand, the text does not specify what are national security and the interests of the Chinese State. With this new version, the authorities will be able to search the electrical devices and other property of suspicious people, and will be able to prevent them from leaving the territory. Worse, telecommunications companies will be required to provide technical assistance when the police make a request.
Nahel. This Saturday, the funeral is organized for Nahel, a 17-year-old boy killed by police fire after refusing to comply on Tuesday in Nanterre. This tragedy triggered numerous revolts across France: demonstrators there denounced police violence. Hundreds of arrests took place after the first four nights of protests.
