The next NATO Summit, which will agree on a new strategic concept of the Allies, will be held in Madrid on June 29 and 30, 2022, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the Secretary
General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg.
Sánchez and Stoltenberg have maintained a meeting at the Moncloa Palace to start the preparations for this citation of the Alliance Leaders and that I could pose the first visit to Spain by Joe Biden as president of the United States.
In a joint appearance, the head of the Executive and the NATO Secretary General have highlighted the importance of this Summit, which he will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the entry of Spain in the organization.
Sánchez has highlighted the transcendence that the strategic concept of NATO is going to be renewed and advanced in the so-called 2030 initiative.
“We are at a historical moment in which Spain is going to play a decisive role in the renovation and modernization of NATO’s postulates,” he added.
The head of the Government has moved to the maximum responsible for the Alliance that will be able to have all the capacities of Spain to celebrate this Summit and that it is going to be dump in its organization to be a success.
The thread of this has ensured that “The History of NATO is the history of an authentic success of security and association between the United States, Canada and Europe” and that Spain wishes to further strengthen the Alliance.
Sánchez has also pointed out that he expects this appointment to “open a conversation with civil society and be aware of the important role played by NATO for the security of the country.”
In his view, the current priority of the Alliance is to guarantee unity and internal cohesion and has ensured that Spain will work for it in the coming months.
For its part, Stoltenberg has grateful to Spain and its president of the Government that will be hosts of the June 2022 Summit.
He has explained that in the celebrated this year in Brussels and in which it was agreed since the next one would organize in Madrid, the leaders of the countries that integrated it agreed a very ambitious program for the future of defense and transatlantic security.
The objective has said that it is to face “a more unpredictable, more dangerous world, in which there is greater competition, with Russia having an increasingly aggressive and Chinese behavior using its economic and military power to intimidate other states.”
“We are going to continue seeing challenges in the southern part of the Mediterranean and instability in North Africa, in the Sahel and in the Near East,” he added.
That is why he said that at the meeting with Sánchez they have addressed how NATO could contribute more to stability in those areas.
For Stoltenberg, these challenges can only be faced together Europe, the United States and Canada and adapting to challenges of the future.
“And that’s what we’re going to do at the Madrid summit next year,” he explained.
It has been referred to the next 40th anniversary of the entry of Spain in NATO to emphasize that, together with the accession of the country to the European Union, the consolidation of democracy in Spain was evidenced.
In these four decades he has affirmed that Spain has worked on the Alliance to get a more insured and peaceful world and has been addressed to Sánchez to praise his role.
“Under his leadership,” he said, “Spain continues to be a very valuable ally who makes very important contributions to that shared security.”
As an example, it has cited the installation of ballistic missiles in Rota or the Torrejón de Ardoz operations center in Madrid.
He has also referred to the Spanish contribution in the training mission in Iraq and in which they are deployed in the Baltic and Turkey.
In the same way, it has highlighted the defense that Spain makes of the collaboration between NATO and the European Union and that has said that it must continue to grow.
At the meeting in Moncloa between Sánchez and Stoltenberg have also come, among others, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and the owner of Defense, Margarita Robles.
