Schwerin (dpa/mv) – This year’s autumn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was unusually warm with an average temperature of 10.7 degrees. It was 1.7 degrees warmer than the average for the years 1961 to 1990, as reported by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Wednesday. The meteorological winter begins this Thursday.

According to the meteorologists, the main reason for the high average temperature in autumn was October, which together with October 2006 is considered to be the warmest in the north-east since measurements began. Between November 19th and 21st there was a cold air snap with frost. “In some cases, the lowest temperatures so far this year have been observed,” said the DWD.

The autumn was still too dry. According to the DWD, 102 liters of rain fell per square meter. The average for the years 1961 to 1990 was 145 liters. The sun shone from the sky for 370 hours – the long-term average was 312 hours.

In Germany as a whole, autumn 2022 was the third warmest since measurements began. But a second assessment – for a meteorologically unusual period – is possible: “Never since 1881 has the period from January to November in Germany been as warm as in 2022,” said DWD spokesman Uwe Kirsche in Offenbach. The mean is 11.3 degrees. The previous high was in 2020 with 11.1 degrees for this period.
